Since the foundation of the town until 1522, mineral water was used only to bathing that took 5 – 12 hours. In 1522 drinking cures started to be used. Excessive quantity of mineral water drank was characteristic for them, 40 – 60 cups per day (1 cup = 160 ml of water). Drinking cures were combined with long lasting bath in hot mineral water. Thanks to this drastic methods, not only the town hospital but also the town cemetery was enlarged.
In 18th century progressive doctor Jan Becher led analysis through the mineral water of Karlovy Vary. Since this time the patients have been cured according individual diagnose. The disproportionate high potions have been reduced to 12-15 cups a day. The water has been drinking by the springs where it has better effect. A special “Spa Regulations” have been brought in the bathing life – the patients gather at specific time by the spring, promenade with the spa cups and drink mineral water.
Since 19th century the spa treatments have been completed with diet system, fenny baths, fenny wraps and showers.
